Slideluck Vancouver IV- 5 days away!

unnamed.jpg

Slideluck Vancouver lV is only 5 days away on Friday the 28th. The organizing committee and the artists are all looking forward to meeting and sharing their art, food and community spirit with everyone.

The show features the jury selection of artists from around the world; Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Iran, Jordan, Mongolia, Russia, Spain, United States and of course, Canada. The imagery interprets the theme of “Influence” in so many diverse ways that each new presentation is a tangent from the last and takes you on journey into something or somewhere else.

How are we influenced by architecture or modern culture? What makes us react to art around us or the natural world that we are part of? How did political will shape the landscape or influence our point of view? Does service to your country shape your viewpoint. Can sexual desire or cultural stereotype affect your perception of an image?

Each artist has made a statement with their work and we are privileged to be able to share them with you on Friday. Our mandate is building community through art and food and Slideluck is a very causal chance for the you and the artists to discuss what influences them while enjoying the work of others and sharing a meal together.

On behalf of our team I hope you will join us on Friday to see great art, enjoy good food and make new friends!

One of the Featured Artists in this years Slideluck- Alessia Palermiti

Featured Artist for Slideluck lll in the ‪#‎Activist‬ catagory Alessia Palermiti of Italy.

As an architect and photographer Alessia observes and documents places on the periphery of metropolitan cities often neglected. She uses her photography to advocate for change.

In her words:
The photography is for me the Interpretation through the documentation, I express myself and my way of observing the world with the images.
Currently in the metropolitan cities the attention is set toward its cultural and economic attractors, often It goes to the detriment of “collective” places (in particular in peripheral urban areas).
These spaces are characterized by strong resiliency, by cultural-social factors and they are influenced by the general environmental context of degrade and abandonment.
“Places” and “not places” in order to increase their inner potentialities, few interventions can bring to the normalcy uncomfortable areas.
My personal contribution, as an architect and a careful observer of the space around me, by using the Photographs is to document the state of them and in the meantime to induce new visions about them.

The understanding and the respect towards the “collective” is fundamental.

One of the featured artists of this years Slideluck III- Robert G Earnest

CapMeet Featured Artist for Slideluck III – Robert G. Earnest

After a very serious accident Robert used his “curious camera” to help himself heal and thus found beauty and meaning in what surrounded him in the night.

In his words:
In January of 2013 I awoke to the sight of acoustic tile ceiling panels. Experience has proven time and time again that this signals the start of a very bad day.
I would soon learn that I had encountered an unannounced patch of black ice waiting at the bottom of a hill on a dark country road.
I was left with broken bones from head to toe and no recollection of the incident whatsoever. It seems I never will.
Restless with the healing process I began to hobble out into the night with a curious camera and a measured pace. There was no reasoning, no intention to save the world but soon there was an obsession with the beauty of the world at night. A beauty that few adults ever experience combined with the vulnerability of being somewhat crippled and alone in the darkness of the night. A lot of time was spent observing and questioning my own irrational fears. Overcoming those fears afforded me some of my life’s most treasured moments. Moments drenched in the perfect beauty of the here and now.

I’d like to share with you some of the beauty that was “Last Night…”

One of the Featured Artists of this years Slideluck III- Mirna Pavlovic

Meet Featured Artist for Slideluck III – Mirna Pavlovic!

Mirna explores the beauty and the ruin of abandoned places: “never truly dead, yet never really alive. They precariously tread along the border between life and death, decay and growth, the seen and the unseen …”

In her words:
Abandoned places exist on the edge of known space, in a reality of their own. Never truly dead, yet never really alive. They precariously tread along the border between life and death, decay and growth, the seen and the unseen, confusingly encompassing both at the same time, and thus leaving the ordinary passer-by overwhelmed with an uncertainty of what to do, a discrepancy between the wish to look away and the unconscious desire to step into it. In a culture that increasingly restricts movement in urban environments, exploring abandoned spaces becomes equally as incongruous in nature as the spaces being explored. The act of exploring, like the abandonments, becomes in itself an act that is both invisible and increasingly present. Both suppressed and flourishing. Explorers are drawn to places that merge these opposing unconscious forces with such a tangible brutality, and they themselves become vehicles of disparity, embodying and assimilating the radical alterity offered by abandonments. This project strives to explore these questions of identity and how abandoned spaces not only flirt with, but rather merge polar opposites which, in turn, appeal to our own unconscious desires to walk on the edge of what should or shouldn’t be done, in places that struggle to find their own definition.

Capic and Capturefest

CapiIt looks like Capturefest is a big success this year!

CAPIC was happy to host two events:

The first was titled After Hours- a juried show of member’s photographs. It highlighted just what commercial photographers photograph on their personal time. The event was held April 9-11th at the Mainspace Gallery. Hundreds viewed the show the opening night and we were happy to see it was such a success. Next year we hope to have a bigger and better show so members start thinking about a theme and/or type of exhibit you would like to be a part of and let us know. Thanks to London Drugs for providing some great printing!

Here are a few photos from the event.

The second event was titled: How Images Affect Us

CAPIC gathered a diverse group of 9 photographers to discuss their Images and how they affect others. It was held at SFU Woodwards on the evening of April 15th.

Each speaker had 7 minutes to talk and at the end was a great Q and A.

The event was a huge success and the speakers showed off some incredible photography and their individual talks were also incredible. Thanks to Beau Photo for their generous sponsorship!!
